Welcome to Siop Y Ganolfan!
Siop Y Ganolfan was established in 1992 in a small side room off the main hall in the Zoar chapel vestry buildings. By supplying the growing demand for Welsh books across the Heads of the Valleys region its profits ensured an income to fund activities, events and social gatherings for Welsh speakers and learners at the newly opened 'Ganolfan Gymraeg' (Welsh Centre) in Merthyr Tudful.
In 2003 the 'Menter Iaith' (Language Initiative) began operating from the premises and since then it is they who have provided and developed the range of Welsh social opportunities in the Ganolfan and outside in the wider community.
Money saved over a number of years by the shop was recently used to match fund an exciting development; 'Zoar Project.' The first phase, completed summer 2009, has provided a new home for the shop in the refurbished chapel vestry. The next phases will include installing a ground source heat pump and significant improvements and refurbishment to all other parts of the chapel complex culminating in the transformation of the chapel itself into a community theatre.
In 2007 the shop became an independant business but still maintains strong working links with the 'mothership' Ganolfan Gymraeg.
